EmpowerHer 4.0: Shaping the Future Through Strength, Skill, and Leadership
How the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA is empowering 60 young women to defend, lead, and thrive.
The energy at this weekend’s closing ceremony was electric—a palpable testament to weeks of hard work, resilience, and growth. The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA officially concluded the 4th Edition of the EmpowerHer Self-Defense Training, a transformative program dedicated to equipping secondary school girls with the tools they need to navigate the world with courage and confidence.
This year, 60 brilliant students from Holy Rosary College, Our Lady of Fatima College, Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC), and Model Secondary School GRA stepped up to the challenge. For weeks, they trained, stretched, learned, stumbled, and rose again—emerging stronger than ever.
More Than Just Defense: A Holistic Curriculum
EmpowerHer goes beyond physical safety; it is designed to build the “whole girl.” Through the expertise of our dedicated partners, the participants mastered three essential pillars:
-
Karate & Self-Defense: Certified instructors guided the girls through practical techniques to ensure their personal safety.
-
First Aid & Health: Experts from the Medical Women Association of Nigeria provided vital training in basic emergency response and personal hygiene.
-
Leadership & Confidence: Passionate Rotarians mentored the girls in etiquette, effective leadership, and self-belief.
The mission is clear: to foster a generation of young women who are capable of protecting themselves, leading their peers, and boldly shaping their own futures.
The Impact: Voices from the Community
The transformation is best seen through the eyes of those who have lived it. Here is what the community is saying about the EmpowerHer impact:
“Before EmpowerHer, I used to walk home scared. Now I know how to protect myself and I’m more confident in school.” — Blessing, Holy Rosary College (Cohort 2)
“The leadership classes changed me. I now lead my school’s health club, and I teach my juniors basic first aid.” — Chisom, FGGC (Cohort 1)
From School Administrators:
-
“EmpowerHer is one of the most impactful programs our girls have experienced. We see the difference in their discipline, courage, and self-esteem.” — Principal, Holy Rosary College
-
“This initiative should be in every school. Beyond self-defense, it shapes character.” — Vice Principal, Our Lady of Fatima College
From Parents:
-
“My daughter now teaches us safety tips at home. We are grateful to Rotary for investing in our children.” — Mrs. Okoro
A Ceremony of Pride
The closing ceremony held this past Saturday was a highlight of the season. As parents, teachers, and Rotarians looked on, the girls demonstrated their newly acquired skills—transitioning seamlessly from precise karate defense stances to rapid, calm emergency first-aid responses.
The joy on their faces and the unwavering confidence in their movements were undeniable. They were no longer just students; they were poised, empowered young leaders.
Why We Do This
At the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA, EmpowerHer is a core commitment to the future. By strengthening the girl child, we aren’t just building safer communities; we are promoting health, leadership, and resilience.
Each edition of this program reinforces a singular truth: When you empower a girl, you empower a generation.
A Heartfelt Thank You
We extend our deepest gratitude to our trainers, the school principals, our fellow Rotarians, and our invaluable partners. Most of all, we thank the 60 incredible girls who showed up, put in the work, and dared to dream bigger.
Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA is proud to stand with you.
