Bringing Clearer Sight and Brighter Futures to Students in Port Harcourt

On Thursday, October 9th, the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA joined forces with the Nigerian Optometric Association, Rivers State Chapter, to turn compassion into clear vision.

At Model Secondary School, GRA, classrooms buzzed not with traditional lessons, but with an overwhelming sense of hope as young students lined up for free eye consultations, thorough screenings, and tailored prescription glasses.

Love Your Eyes in Action

Under the global campaign theme “Love Your Eyes: Vision for All,” Rotarians and expert optometrists worked side by side throughout the day. Their efforts went beyond basic screenings, delivering:

  • Vital eye medications

  • Practical health education on eye care

  • Referrals for advanced medical care when necessary

For many of the participating students, this marked a life-changing milestone—the very first time they could see the world sharply, from the words on the chalkboard to their textbooks and the smiles of their friends.

Service with a Smile

Reflecting on the impact of the outreach, one volunteer shared: “Rotary is about service, but today, service came with smiles,” capturing the sentiment as the team carefully fitted a young girl with her first pair of glasses.

By the time the outreach concluded, over a hundred students had their vision protected or restored. It was a powerful reminder of how partnership and purpose can create small miracles right in our local classrooms.

The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA remains committed to being people of action—bringing clearer vision and much brighter futures to the next generation.
